Population

5.7 million live in Denmark. Approximately 13 % of the population are migrants. 25 % of the Danish population are + 60 years old. 

Geography

Denmark has a total area of 42.000 km2 and is the 132 largest country in the world. There are 1400 islands of which 72 are inhabited. This gives Denmark a total coastline of 7.300 km. The highest point is 171 meters above sea level.

There are 4 major cities in Denmark 

  • Copenhagen (capital): 1.2 million
  • Aarhus: 260.000
  • Odense: 175.000
  • Aalborg: 112.000

The parliament and monarchy

Denmark is a parliamentary democracy. The Danish Parliament is called ‘Folketinget’, and the Danes elect their 179 parliamentary representative at least every four years.

Denmark is one of the world’s oldest kingdoms. Our current monarch is Queen Margrethe II who has ruled since 1972. 

Official language

Danish is the official language. Danes are known for their great English skills, especially in the major cities. German is also spoken, particularly in the southern part of Jutland. 

Currency

Although Denmark is a member of the EU, Denmark has not introduced the Euro as currency. The Danish currency is called “kroner”. Though it varies, 1 Euro is usually converted to around 7.5 Danish Kroner. 

Payment with credit card and cash

In Denmark we use credit cards with a pin number. If you do not have a pin number, you cannot use your credit card or withdraw money from ATMs. Credit cards can be used almost everywhere in Denmark.
