Paid holidays

What are the rules concerning how to earn holiday allowance, when are you entitled to payment during holiday leaves and what is the payment you will receive while you are on holiday? You can get answers to these questions in this section.

  • Number of holidays.
  • Holiday payment.
  • Special holidays according to the collective agreement.
  • Public holidays in Denmark.

Holiday payment in Denmark is partly governed by the collective agreement, and partly by the Danish holiday law.

According to Danish law, you are entitled to 5 weeks of holiday per year or approximately 2,08 day per month.

If your employer is covered by a collective agreement, you may be entitled to other special holidays with full payment. See which ones you are entitled to below:

Holiday payment

It is mandatory that you pay 12,5% of your wage for holiday payment. All contributions are paid to the specific Holiday Account (Feriekonto).

Holidays based on the collective agreement

If your company is covered by a collective agreement between the employer’s association GLS-A and the trade union 3F, you are entitled to a “special holiday”, called feriefridage, which are extra days off.

The feriefridage entitles you to have one day off for every 2,4 months employment with full pay.

When you work in a company with a collective agreement with GLS-A and 3F these days are holidays:

  • June 5th from midday (Danish Constitution day)
  • December 24th

Payment of holidays based on the collective agreement

6,75% of your wage is saved for a special “SH-account” (account for Sun- and holiday payment) which also includes the feriefridage mentioned above.

If you work on these days, you should get overtime payment.

If you have not had time off on your feriefridage you can have the money paid by the end of the year or when your finish the employment.
